Watch Saebyeolbe and NYXL management discuss team formation

The Overwatch League Grand Finals have wrapped up, but earlier this week, the hometown New York Excelsior made sure to make Overwatch fans of any kind feel at home by throwing a homecoming party for the team, and the league itself. Even though the night ended with lots of singing and dancing, there were some informative moments that happened early on. We already shared a look into one of the panels held during the show, but there was one more “Livin’ XL” panel that took place a few nights ago, with this one centering on the Overwatch League as a whole through the lens of the NYXL.

The panel above consists of a more modest group this time around. Featured once again are YouTuber and cosplay personality Mica Burton and featured panelist and journalist Rod “Slasher” Breslau, but this time they are joined by Rohit Gupta – a member of NYXL management and a partner at Sterling VC – and Jong-ryeol “Saebyeolbe” Park, a DPS player for the New York Excelsior and arguably the best Tracer player in the world. Instead of digging deep into gaming as a whole, this panel instead focuses on how NYXL came to be, with Rohit describing how he traveled to Korea for Overwatch APEX in order to interview various teams to represent New York.

According to Gupta, the pitch to play for a team named after New York was a tough one, and he spent some time on the flight to Korea coming up with a way to explain to the players what they would be representing. Even though the team didn’t live up to its own expectations, Gupta still noted that the team was “hungry” throughout the season and that not only have the fans and community of New York fell in love with the team, but the players on the team have also adopted some mannerisms from the city as well.

Obviously, the rest of the panel is filled with great moments, and any fan of NYXL will want to watch it. However, even if you’re not a fan, it’s still an interesting look at how teams are made up, how players come to sign, and how the league operates as a whole. There’s even some great participation from the audience members, who get in some great questions for all those seated. Make sure to check it out and let us know what you think about it.
