Tennis pros react to Andy Murray's heartbreaking announcement

In an emotional press conference Friday in Melbourne before the start of the 2019 Australian Open, Andy Murray fought back tears as he announced that his hip injury is forcing him into an early retirement. Murray said that he hopes to return to Wimbledon and play his final tournament there, but he isn’t sure whether he’ll be able to play through the constant pain.

“I spoke to my team and I told that I can’t keep doing this, that I needed to have an end point because (I was) just playing with no idea when the pain was going to stop,” he told the news conference Friday. “I said to my team ‘I think I can get through to Wimbledon’ … that’s where I would like to stop playing. But I’m also not certain I’m able to do that.”

Murray became the top-ranked player in the world in 2016, but his hip injury has plagued him since 2017, and he has missed four of the last five Grand Slams. Tennis legends and Murray’s colleagues posted tributes to the British star after his press conference on Friday.
