The 2019 French Open is into the Third Round as the usual stars continue to advance at Roland Garros. Novak Djokovic has reclaimed his place as the top seed in Paris, but king of clay Rafael Nadal will be the one to watch as he looks to extend his all-time record of 12 title victories in this tournament. Both have advanced with ease so far, putting fans one step closer to some potentially juicy quarterfinals.

World number 2 Nadal received an accommodating path through the early rounds of the competition and dispatched qualifiers in each of the first two rounds, before taking down #27 David Goffin in the Round of 32 and Juan Ignacio Londero in the Round of 16. Djokovic cruised in the first four rounds as well, and will play in the Quarterfinals against a to-be-determined opponent. To fans’ delight, Nadal is on a collision course for a potential battle with longtime court rival, Roger Federer in the semifinals.
Federer, 37, won his only French Open 10 years ago and hasn’t featured in a Roland Garros final since 2011. Nevertheless, he has acquitted himself nicely thus far, winning on straight sets in the opening four rounds. His Quarterfinal will be against fellow countryman Stan Wawrinka, who won a battle of attrition against Stefano Tsitsipas in a 5-hour epic.
Naomi Osaka has continued her strides since winning her maiden major at the 2018 U.S. Open, since adding the Australian Open to her list of achievements and eyeing a third Grand Slam in Paris.
Defending women’s champions Simona Halep is seeded third entering the defence of her crown, and with Osaka and Wiliams out, her path back to the final is looking all the clearer.
The French Open has produced five different women’s champions over the past five years. Halep could become the first player to defend a Roland Garros title since Justine Henin won three back-to-back between 2005 and 2007 should she retain in 2019.
Djokovic could complete a second career Grand Slam and will hold all four major titles should he win at Roland Garros, but a sea of contenders will rise in an attempt to crush his hopes.
Federer Schedule: Quarterfinal vs. Stan Wawrinka – Tues, Jun 4 at 8:00 AM
Nadal Schedule: Quarterfinal vs. Kei Nishikori – Tues, Jun 4 at 9:15 AM
Djokovic Schedule: Quarterfinal vs. TBD
