Daniil Medvedev rallies back to stun Novak Djokovic for the second straight time

Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev is having quite the year, which includes upsetting world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in consecutive matches.

Ranked eighth in the world, 23-year-old Medvedev beat defending Western & Southern Open champ Djokovic, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, on Saturday in Cincinnati to reach his second ATP Masters 1000 final in two weeks and his third straight final. He lost to Rafael Nadal in the final of the Rogers Cup in Montreal last weekend and to Nick Kyrgios in the final of the Citi Open in Washington, D.C. two weekends ago.

After playing in his 17th match in 19 days, Medvedev is now only down 3-2 overall to Djokovic after also beating the 32-year-old Serbian player in the quarterfinals of the Monte-Carlo Masters in April. It’s the third time they’ve met this year after Djokovic won in the round of 16 at the Australian Open in January on his way to a Grand Slam win.

Medvedev has some issues with his right arm and appeared to be in pain in the second set, according to ATP, but a visit from a trainer seemed to solve the issue and allowed him to rally back. He won the set and gave up just four unforced errors.

With momentum, he was able to take the third set as well, and his 16 accessible were the most Djokovic has given up this year in three-set matches.

Saturday’s win was also Medvedev’s tour-leading 43rd match win of the year. He will face world No. 19 David Goffin in the final Sunday.

More via ATP:

“To be honest, I don’t know how I did it,” Medvedev told Brad Gilbert of ESPN. “I was so tired in the first set and playing Novak I thought I wasn’t able to keep the intensity. Then, the one momentum change in the second set was the difference. The crowd gave me so much energy.

“Usually I’ll go bigger on my second serve when it’s not working and Novak was just destroying me in the first set. At one moment, I said to myself why do a normal second serve if I’m going to lose the point. I started to win much more after that.”

For Djokovic, it was the first time he lost an ATP Masters 1000 semifinal after winning the first set since 2013 when he lost to Juan Martín del Potro at Indian Wells, per ATP.
