1 incredible stat from Serena Williams' win over American teenager Caty McNally

There are endless ways to describe Serena Williams’ dominance, power and GOAT-ness. We’ve tried some of them. And after Serena’s scare against fellow American Caty McNally in the second round of the U.S. Open on Tuesday, we came across another one.

After making several errors early in the match, Williams fought back and won, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1, and is still undefeated in the second round of the tournament with a 19-0 record. She’s also the only woman in the Open Era with a winning record after losing the first set, per ESPN, but neither of those stats are the point here.

So, for a little context, Serena is 37 years old, and, although she played well beyond her age and experience for much of the match, McNally is just 17, meaning she was not yet born when Serena won her first Grand Slam, which happened to be the 1999 U.S. Open.

After beating McNally, Serena’s record against teenagers improved to 118-18 overall — 56-3 in Grand Slams. As the WTA noted during Tuesday night’s match at Arthur Ashe Stadium:

Yes, beating a teenager is not that big of a deal when you’re not too many years removed from being one yourself, and, obviously, not every match is against a player in her teens.

But 56-3 is outrageous.

And, with Serena comfortably in her late 30s and appearing in three Grand Slam finals since giving birth in 2017, the fact that she’s still somewhat regularly beating teenagers is incredible. Beyond McNally, in 2019, she beat 18-year-old Kaja Juvan at Wimbledon and then-18-year-old Dayana Yastremska at the Australian Open.

Players often compete at their highest level against Serena — she has said that it part of what makes her so good — and the younger ones may be faster or more adaptable. But Serena has her power and an unparalleled resume with decades of experience winning.

Against McNally, Serena was beating herself with unforced errors as the teenager from Cincinnati was calm and serving incredibly well before her game started to fall apart in the second set. At that point, Williams took over and dominated, winning 13 of the first 14 points in the third set and breaking McNally twice.

As the No. 8 seed, her third-round match is Friday and will be against either No.29 seed Hsieh Su-wei or Karolina Muchova, who face off Thursday.
